    The head of a digital publishers’ trade association argues that Facebook can’t rebuild trust while continuing data practices that track its users all across the Internet — and beyond.
    BuzzFeed’s fake-news reporter outlines some of the dangers ahead: “We have a human problem on our hands. Our cognitive abilities are in some ways overmatched by what we have created.”
    “We’re making the kinds of judgments that we think will be noncontroversial, but still are the kind of judgments that platforms, rightly, don’t want to be making themselves.”
    “It’s not so much about gaming Facebook’s algorithm or working with the Facebook changes as much as it is taking advantage of Facebook as a truly social platform.”
    What’s clear is that Facebook has plenty of data from users already, which it can — will — use in conjunction with its two-question survey.
    But they’re evenly split on whether or not the news selection algorithms on sites like Facebook and Twitter should be regulated.
    “Rebuilding trust will a long-term process and will require the commitment of publishers, platforms, and consumers over many years.”
    “Fundamentally, we have always seen NII as a public service project. We want people to feel powerful — visible, valued, and engaged in their communities because they are armed with relevant and reliable news and information.”
