    Like Circa before it, The Guardian aims to atomize a big breaking story into its individual parts — and then be smart about showing you the right ones at the right time.
    The Guardian Mobile Innovation Lab’s podcast player for the mobile web lets you listen to a show without using a podcast app, and get phone notifications that point you to links and graphics at relevant points in the story as the audio plays.
    “Our big premise is, we’re trying to be an open news desk for the internet. At the end of the day, we’re just trying to fuel a healthier, more open ecosystem of journalism.”
    The Guardian revamped its ask and its membership offerings — moving from 12,000 members in the beginning of 2016 to 300,000 today.
    Unlike other Medium partners, they’re not paid per clap: “Medium has derisked it for us by providing financial value while creating opportunities for us to establish direct relationships with readers.”
    And why are offline reading apps still so stodgy?
    “We want to support people who actually live in these places reporting on their own states, about inequality, and then we want to bring them to traditional elite audiences.”
    The move comes after a number of high-profile publishers have stepped back from Facebook’s distributed-content offering, preferring to direct Facebook mobile users to their websites.
