The site was by Nathan Chong and Paul Biggar as part of NewsLabs, a project of the noted startup incubator . Both NewsLabs and NewsTilt were in June 2010.

The site to serve as a platform for individual journalists and build community around them, similar to . The site between freelance journalists and publications, splitting money with writers. Ultimately, though, NewsTilt for its writers.
