    Stories on Business Models

Only 20 percent of the FT’s subscribers were women. Now the paper is doing a lot of things to change that.
“I think there’s a very viable long-term financial model for commercial media. But I don’t necessarily think that applies directly to journalism.”
“We tested this, it tanked. You tested this, it worked. Why?”
“The sins are different; but they are still sins, just as apples and oranges are still both fruit. Exposing readers to data vampires is simply wrong on its face, and we need to fix it.”
“We work in the membership model more than the subscription model, in that the primary motivation for people to support a journalist on Pactio is the fact that they want your reporting to exist in the first place.”
Even without the L.A. Times, it still controls a lot of important newspapers. Will it sell them to Gannett, Murdoch, local individuals in each city — or to yet another private equity firm looking to strip papers for parts?
“We’re thinking about our voice as an empathetic older sister who happens to be an OB-GYN.”
Also: an easier subscription flow, $10 million for media literacy in U.S. high schools, fact-checking efforts in search around health issues, and more.
Hidden cameras. Leadership disagreements. And, oh yeah, misinformation is still a problem.
